Batman Family

Librarian, Vigilante
Age Looks:
Late teens, early 20's.
Appearance:
Barbara is a girl who seems to age gracefully, retaining her youthful appearance from her late teenage years. She is what many would consider petite, weighing in at about 126 pounds. While she does have a slender frame she still has a somewhat curvaceous figure and often friends joke that her weight goes straight to her ample bust size. She stands at roughly 5'7 meaning she rarely towers over anyone. It could be said that being smaller would be a hindrance to crime fighting, but her small stature mostly leads to others underestimating the smaller woman who actually packs quite the punch. Perhaps her most outstanding feature is the long flowing locks of red that hang just past her shoulders. Barbara's hair can either be wavy or straight depending on her mood for the day. She has sky blue eyes and thin eyebrows, with no blemish or scar to tarnish her beautiful cream colored skin. She wears a light amount of makeup, preferring dark shades of lipstick whether she is in costume or dressed as a civilian. Her attire consists of a wide array of clothing and she rarely wears a singular type of clothing. For the most part she likes to save her fancier clothing for special occasions. As Batgirl, she wears a skintight black suit that hugs her surprisingly toned figure. On her chest lies a yellow bat symbol to pronounce her allegiance to the bat family. She wears a pair of boots and gauntlets that are the same shade of yellow. She wears a cowl very similar to her favorite hero, although a part of the back is cut out to allow her hair to flow freely while she is wearing it. While the outside of her cape is black as her costume, the inner part of it is a dark shade of purple. Finally the outfit is topped off by the utility belt that rests on her hips.
Personality:
Barbara is an intelligent and quick witted young woman who wishes nothing more than to go on many great adventures. She is perhaps the least likely member of the Bat family to be considered brooding and is the quickest one of the bunch to bring humor to the fray. To her, crime fighting has never always been just about serving the greater good and uses it to feed her thrill seeking attitude. She is far from naive however, and understands the risks of her vigilantism as well as the importance of her presence in Gotham. In all actuality she uses her sarcastic remarks and confident attitude as a coping mechanism for all of the horrible things she has witnessed in her years as a crime fighter. When dealing with the criminal underworld of Gotham one has to take certain precautions against the rather dark nature of the city, and Barbara has certainly found her way of handling things. As Batgirl she comes off as boastful and isn't afraid to taunt any criminals that she may find herself against. Although the beginning of her career was plagued with self doubt and fear Barbara has really come into her own as a hero, and has not only the confidence but the skill set to handle most common thugs and can handle herself against many of Gotham's big named villains.
In spite of the fact that Barbara started off as someone who was enthralled with the idea of being a superhero, she truly has a strong sense of justice similar to her father Commissioner Gordon. Her sharp tongue is only matched by her ferocious dedication towards working for the 'greater good'. From time to time she can still get caught up in her old ways but deep down really cares about the people she is protecting. She is an extremely empathetic individual who can easily tell when someone is feeling downtrodden. Her caring nature often leads her to believe that she needs to help everyone, even when some people are not capable of being saved. She can be sensitive when it comes to hostages and the like and often feels great despair when she fails to come to an innocent's rescue. She is capable of dealing with failure however, and has grown relatively strong in the face of adversity. While she knows the importance of her work she also understands that there should be a balance of crime fighting and having a fun time, and doesn't have the same sense of duty that Dick or Bruce had. However when she gets involved in something she will buckle down and tackle whatever the problem is without rest.
Barbara prefers to fight using her brains rather than her brawn. She is quick to try and outsmart or trick an opponent in battle, trying to avoid long winded confrontation. She often uses her environment to her advantage and can find use in even the most basic of tools. Barbara is an intuitive and thoughtful person who can She truly believes that almost everybody has the capacity to do the right thing, which leads her to try and appeal to the kindness in people's hearts. She can be a rallying force when need be and somehow knows exactly the right words to say to get someone to join her side. In spite of her ability to move people she isn't exactly adept at doing it on a large scale, and prefers not to be the leader if she can help it. Lately however her luster for fighting crime has significantly dropped, and she barely finds time or motivation to go out at night. Ever since Bruce disappeared however she has begun to increase the amount of time she's been spending patrolling the streets to make up for lost time.

Background:
Barbara was born to James Gordon and Barbara Eileen during the early years of Commissioner Gordon's career in Gotham. She and her brothers often had aspirations to be super heroes when they grew up and they often spent many of their nights pretending that they were masked adventurers. It was during these early years that Barbara truly began to yearn for the opportunity to fight crime when she grew older. She would continue on through her childhood never quite giving up her dreams even though it seemed like a long shot. She proved herself to be an extremely intelligent young girl and quickly worked her way through school with the help of her photographic memory, and it seemed as if she was on the track for a successful future in whatever she planned on doing. Her skill with computer science was perhaps her greatest strength and many of her teachers took note. Realizing that being a superhero would be impractical she set aside such childish fantasies and graduated from high school at the young age of 16. Around this time a caped crusader began patrolling the streets of Gotham, and the dark knight piqued her interest.
What started out as genuine curiosity turned into something slightly more obsessive. Barbara spent most of her nights trying to learn all about the one known as Batman. Ideas of being a crime fighter flowed through her head and she became infatuated with Gotham's protector. She awoke one evening to the sound of talking down the hall from her room. As she approached the door she recognized her father's voice, and didn't quite know who the other voice belonged too. To her great surprise she discovered that her father was talking to her idol. After this revelation her passion for vigilantism only grew stronger and she began working towards making herself into a full fledged crime fighter. Much to the chagrin of her father she pressed him incessantly to sign her up for self defense classes. After much prodding he finally relented and she began her journey into martial arts and proved to be almost prodigal. She earned her black belt in an extremely short span of time due to her natural skill combined with her fierce determination to become Batman's sidekick. She had an easy time balancing all of her extra curricular activities and eventually got a full scholarship to Gotham University which she excitedly joined, given that it let her stay close to Batman.
She became one of Gotham University's youngest students and eventually graduated with honors with a computer science and forensics degree. While she wanted to be a crime fighter she was willing to be a police officer, although the idea seemed laughable to her father. She felt angry that he mocked her attempts to join the police force and went directly to the local FBI office attempting to find work there, but it seemed as if she lacked much of traits needed of an officer. With no where left to turn she took up a job as a librarian as a source of income, but never stopped her training. She was trained thoroughly in jujitsu and was coming into her own as a skilled fighter. She felt that she needed to get back at her father somehow for brushing aside her dreams so casually and made her own Batgirl costume. She would show up at the upcoming Million Dollar Masquerade dressed as "Batgirl", mainly intending to crash the party. She was shocked when she showed up to discover that a group of criminals had seized control of the country club where the party was being hosted. The most significant hostage was one Bruce Wayne who was being held by the groups leader. Putting her knowledge of martial arts into action she assaulted the leader and began taking out several of the members. She found herself outgunned and outnumbered, and eventually was caught by the group of criminals. She was about to meet her end when Batman and Robin appeared saving her in the last minute. Although they took several of the gang members down a majority of them got away as Batman and Robin were preoccupied in saving Barbara.
The young girl was berated by the Dark Knight for getting in the way, and told her that what she was doing was a dangerous job and she wasn't cut out for it. Barbara was hurt and shocked by this but would not be deterred from her path. Having got a taste of what it was like to be a hero Barbara discovered that she wanted to do it more and more. Despite Batman's disapproval he gifted the girl with a set of Batarangs by one Dick Grayson. Using her intuition as well as her extensive knowledge of Batman, the up and coming hero figured out Batman and Robin's secret identities which thoroughly impressed the Dark Knight. Seeing that she had the passion and the skills required Batman finally relented and swore Barbara in by oath, relenting his secret identity to her. After all of those years of dreaming and hoping Barbara finally got her wish, and she flourished as the partner of Batman and Robin. She became a valuable ally to the cause and started to develop a crush on Dick Grayson during this time, although she never acted upon those feelings. She managed to expertly juggle her dual life style and her family was none the wiser that Barbara was indeed the Batgirl.
As the years went on Barbara found that the vigilante life style was not all she imagined it. She found her role as Batgirl was becoming less fulfilling. As time passed she began to slowly lower the rate at which she would go on patrol with Bruce and eventually more or less retired. She knew Gotham was in good hands however, seeing the things that Bruce could do and peacefully continued her day to day life happy with her position as a librarian. Perhaps what no one saw coming was Batman just vanishing from existence.
